Stokesia
Common Name: Stokesia
Scientific Name: Stokesia Laevis
Exposure: Full Sun-Part Shade
Size: 1' - 2'
Bloom Color: Light Blue, White
Time: Spring, Fall
Notes: Another one of our favorites, this evergreen perennial blooms spring and fall. The flowers are 2-3" frilly blue or white blossoms that last a long time. The 15" stems can be pretty floppy and we will sometimes stake them. The evergreen rosettes stay fairly short but with the taller flowers, we seldom put them on the bed edge and usually set them back behind shorter plants. They prefer afternoon shade, moderate fertilizer and moist, well-drained soil.

Verbena
Common Name: Verbena
Scientific Name: Verbena Spp.
Exposure: Full Sun-Part Shade
Size: 1'
Bloom Color: Red, Pink, White, Purple
Time: Spring, Summer, Fall
Notes: Comes as an annual or perennial. We use the perennial. It's a tough spreading groundcover plant that will be covered in flowers from late spring to the first frost. It can have insect problems and when that happens we usually cut the plants back and give them a bit of fertilizer and extra water. They will come back better than ever and by then the insects have usually moved on. Plant in sun or part shade- not too far back in the bed because they aren't normally tall plants. Likes moist, well-drained soil.
