Ginger - Hidden
Common Name: Ginger - Hidden
Scientific Name: Curcuma Petiolata
Exposure: Part Shade
Size: 2 - 3'
Bloom Color: Light Pink
Time: Summer
Notes: An excellent perennial for our area, the leaves are large and tropical looking. The pink, white and yellow flowers which appear in mid-summer are 6-8" tall and grow in the center of the foliage. Even though this plant is 2-3' tall, we usually use it close to walkways so the flowers can be enjoyed. It likes moist, well- drained, acid soil and we feed it with a complete balanced fertilizer in early spring. Hidden gingers prefer light shade but do very well in dappled sun. The foliage dies back in winter, so cut it back to the ground and mulch with leaves or compost.

Ginger Variegated Common
Name: Ginger Variegated
Scientific Name: Alpinia Zerumbet 'Variegata'
Exposure: Part Shade-Shade
Size: 3' - 5'
Bloom Color: White, Clear Pink
Time: Summer
Notes: A beautiful plant with bold yellow-variegated leaves for shady areas. Although it has interesting flowers, we seldom see them in our area as flowers occur on second year growth, and the plants normally die back each winter. Mulch well in winter and feed once or twice a year with a complete, balanced fertilizer. These plants prefer moist, well-drained soil.
