Daylily - General
Common Name: Daylily - General
Scientific Name: Hemerocallis Spp.
Exposure: Full Sun-Part Shade
Size: 1' - 3' +
Bloom Color: Yellow, Orange, Pink, Peach, Red, White
Time: Spring, Summer

Notes: Daylilies come in yellow, orange, pink, peach, red and white. Some are evergreen. They have different bloom times generally categorized as early, mid and late. They are also different heights. By a careful selection of daylilies, we can get several months of bloom color in the spring and early summer. Each flower lasts only one day. They like moist well-drained soil, neither too wet nor too dry. They prefer full sun but will perform very nicely in part shade. They can be fertilized spring and summer with a complete, balanced, slow release fertilizer, but will not suffer if an application is missed. Very easy care.

Scientific Name: Hemerocallis x 'Stella D'Oro'
Exposure: Full Sun-Part Shade
Size: 1'
Bloom Color: Yellow
Time: Spring, Summer

Notes: One of the best perennials for our area and the longest blooming daylilies around. They start blooming in early summer and their bloom time gets longer every year as the clumps enlarge. They are not evergreen so we often use them behind an evergreen border plant.

Dianthus Lavender Lace

Dianthus Lavender Lace
Common Name: Dianthus Lavender Lace
Scientific Name: Dianthus Superbus
Exposure: Full Sun-Part Shade
Size: 2' - 3'
Bloom Color: Lavender
Time: Summer, Fall

Notes: One of our favorites, this perennial is normally evergreen in our area and the grass-like foliage makes a nice ground cover when not blooming. The frilly 1" flowers bloom in clusters and have a light fragrance. They will bloom more heavily if spent flowers are removed. They will reseed if the spent flowers are left on. The flower stalks can be floppy if they are in too much shade or staying too wet. This dianthus blooms later and longer than most, usually May to November or longer in mild winters. The finely dissected lavender blooms make this a flower for close-up viewing so we usually put it fairly close to the edge of a bed near plants with heavier textures. Lavender Lace likes morning sun and a well- drained soil. We usually feed it in spring with a 13-13-13 or similar fertilizer.

Ginger Variegated Common
Name: Ginger Variegated
Scientific Name: Alpinia Zerumbet 'Variegata'
Exposure: Part Shade-Shade
Size: 3' - 5'
Bloom Color: White, Clear Pink
Time: Summer

Notes: A beautiful plant with bold yellow-variegated leaves for shady areas. Although it has interesting flowers, we seldom see them in our area as flowers occur on second year growth, and the plants normally die back each winter. Mulch well in winter and feed once or twice a year with a complete, balanced fertilizer. These plants prefer moist, well-drained soil.
