Clerodendron
Common Name: Clerodendron
Scientific Name: Clerodendron Speciosissimum
Exposure: Part Shade
Size: 6 - 7'
Bloom Color: Red
Time: Spring, Summer
Notes: Clerodendron is a tall, semi-woody perennial with very large heart shaped leaves and brilliant scarlet flowers. The flowers grow above the leaves in large pyramidal panicles and attract hummingbirds. Its coarse texture and exotic flowers give it a very tropical look. It will normally freeze back in the winter but will return from the roots in spring. We cut back freeze damaged parts in late winter and feed it then with about one cup of 13-13-13 fertilizer. A hard winter seems to inhibit flowering so we try to plant it in a protected spot against a wall or under trees. Our references say that clerodendron will grow in full sun to partial shade, but we have only had success with it in almost full shade. Although it likes a bright location, it doesn't seem to like direct sun in our area.

Coreopsis Common Name: Coreopsis
Scientific Name: Coreopsis Lanceolata
Exposure: Full Sun-Part Shade
Size: 1' - 3'
Bloom Color: Yellow
Time: Late Spring, Summer
Notes: One of our native perennials, Coreopsis are both heat and drought tolerant. We usually remove spent flowers and stems to keep them tidy and stimulate more blooms. They will get floppy, especially after heavy wind or rain, so we usually use them in a cottage garden style setting.

Crinum Erubescens
Common Name: Crinum Erubescens
Scientific Name: Crinum Erubescens
Exposure: Full Sun-Part Shade
Size: 2' - 3'
Bloom Color: White
Time: Summer
Notes: This pretty crinum can be grown as an aquatic. They flower best when the clumps are left undisturbed for several years. This crinum has a lovely scent and makes a nice cut flower. We keep stakes handy since the flowering stem almost always wants to lay on the ground. Other than that, these plants don't need much attention.
