Australian Violet
Common Name: Australian Violet
Scientific Name: Viola hederacea
Exposure: Full Sun-Shade
Size: 6" - 10"
Bloom Color: White and Purple
Time: Spring, Summer

Notes: Australian Violet makes a great groundcover; normally evergreen and blooming most of the year. The small flowers are white and purple and stand about 4" above the foliage which hugs the ground and is usually about 4-6" tall and very dense. It will spread quickly and requires a bit of maintenance to keep it out of areas where it is not wanted, but it is not a deep rooted aggressive spreader. Before the clumps have grown together it could be fertilized spring and summer with a complete, balanced, slow release fertilizer, but once it is full, it should be happy with a single application in the fall. Its prefers moist, well-drained soil; like most plants, it doesn't like to be too wet or too dry but is fairly drought tolerant once established.

Canna
Common Name: Canna
Scientific Name: Canna x generalis
Exposure: Full Sun-Part Shade
Size: 2' - 6'
Bloom Color: Red, Orange, Yellow, Pink
Time: Early Summer to Fall

Notes: Cannas have a very tropical look, but we usually reserve them for distance viewing. The leaf caterpillars will chew holes through the leaves before they open which, along with the old flower stems, gives them an unkempt appearance. We use a systemic insecticide to control the caterpillars and cut out the old stems close to the ground to keep them tidy for closer viewing. Most cannas are about 6' tall, although there are dwarf varieties that stay about 2' high. Colors include yellow, orange, red and pink, and there are some with variegated flowers- very exotic looking. There are also a couple that have variegated foliage that is extremely bold and striking. They grow from a bulb and multiply like crazy if they are happy. They love water and can be used as a bog plant. They are happiest in full sun and will not flower as well in even part shade. Cannas bloom from early summer to fall- they love the heat.
