Using Groundcovers to Your Advantage

We all have those spots in the landscape that we struggle with, whether it's a "bald" area under a shady tree, or a neglected corner of the garden, or a dry patch that gets too much sun.  Ground covers are a great option since they provide a lush, sprawling tapestry of color and form even in areas where grass won't grow! Once a ground cover is established, they can also lower annual lawn maintenance requirements (compared to mowing and grooming a lawn of the same area). Ground covers typically require less water to maintain, reduce competing weed growth, and only need to be cut back occasionally.

Now is a great time to plant all kinds of groundcovers.  To choose the right groundcover for your desired area, you’ll need to consider if you want something blooming, your preferred height and color, the hardiness or invasiveness of the plant, and the sun/shade requirements.

Here are details about some of our favorites for the area:

VINCA- A sprawling vine-type ivy with purple flowers blooming spring through fall.  It grows well in partial sun to full shade and is reasonably drought-tolerant once established.

LYSIMACHIA- Very easy to grow in morning sun or bright shade and it makes wonderful, long-lasting flowers.  It tends to spread quite rapidly when grown in moist soil, so be sure to give it lots of room to grow.

SEDUM - A low-maintenance groundcover that loves the sun, requires little water, works well in small spaces, and stays evergreen.  There are many different colors of low-growing, creeping sedums to choose from. (Photo is Sedum Green)

ASIAN JASMINE- A popular evergreen that makes a tough groundcover in full sun or shade with growth heights of 6-12 inches.  Asian jasmine is hard to beat because it's a hardy, strong spreader that provides a dense cover.

•MONDO GRASS (Monkey Grass) & LIRIOPE- Excellent, hardygroundcovers that grow well in full sun or full shade. Giant Liriope can become more of a focal point than a ground cover because of it's size.  Dwarf Mondo grass on the other hand, is a very low growing variety that can be useful for growing between the cracks in stepping stones, and prefers shade. AJUGA- A semi-evergreen with purple flowers that works great as a ground cover because it's low-growing and spreads fast.  It will grow in sun or part shade and is heat tolerant, but note that it is susceptible to root rot.

LANTANA- Beautiful spreading perennial reaching 1 ft. height with many colors and varieties to choose from.  Lantana thrives in Texas heat, is wind & drought tolerant, and does best in full sun.  It's also deer, pest, and disease resistant!  It goes dormant in the winter and needs to be cut back to about 6 inches in late February or when there is no more threat of frost.  (Photo of Lantana White)

DWARF CHENILLE- Cute, low growing type Chenille Plant.  Grow in partial shade in evenly moist well drained soil.   Its small stature and showy blooms of bright red catkin flowers make it a great choice for a groundcover in non traffic areas.  It also does well as a container or hanging basket plant because of it's spreading and cascading habit.  Note: All parts of this plant are poisonous if ingested.
