Caladium
Common Name: Caladium
Scientific Name: Caladium x Hortulanum
Exposure: Part Shade-Shade
Size: 1 1/2' - 1'
Bloom Color : Var. Foliage- Red, Rose, Pink, White, Bronze, Green
Time: Summer

Notes: Although used as an annual, caladiums will often return the second and maybe third year with smaller and fewer leaves. If we have a very harsh winter, they probably will not come back. They are grown for their large colorful leaves and the flowers have little ornamental value. We usually pinch off the flowers as soon as they appear in order to keep the plants energy focused on the foliage. Although caladiums used to be for shade only, there are now several kinds that will do fine in full sun. This kind will usually have a smaller "strap" type leaf.

Notes: Coleus, like caladiums, are grown for their brightly colored foliage. They grow fast and like a fertile, well-drained location in filtered sunlight. However, also like the caladiums, there are new varieties that like full sun. They get somewhat large and can be used very effectively in a newly planted bed to fill in for perennials that are still small. We usually pinch back the flowers to encourage a fuller plant, but some varieties need heavier pruning to fill out. They root very easily and we sometimes take cuttings before the first frost and grow them indoors until spring, when we plant them out. We usually feed new plants with a complete, balanced, slow release fertilizer.

Datura Purple Swirl

[Datura Purple Swirl IMAGE]

Datura Purple Swirl
Common Name: Datura Purple Swirl
Scientific Name: Datura Inoxia Quinquecuspida
Exposure: Full Sun-Part Shade
Size: 4' - 5'
Bloom Color: Purple and White
Time: Summer

Notes: Can be perennial in our area but we don't rely on it. They will die back each winter and sometimes come back from roots in spring, but, if not, we usually find several seedlings in the vicinity of the original plant. The leaves almost always get small round holes in them but once the flowers start blooming the leaves are seldom noticed. The blooms are about 6" long and trumpet shaped. They can be single or double, and we normally use yellow or purple swirl. Very striking and exotic looking. They prefer full sun and moist, well-drained soil. Plants grow to 4' high and wide and are poisonous so we normally place them back in the bed behind other plants where the flowers are still very visible but harder for children and pets to get to.

Sweet Alyssum

Sweet Alyssum
Common Name: Sweet Alyssum
Scientific Name: Lovularia Maritima
Exposure: Full Sun
Size: 6"
Bloom Color: White, Pink, Purple, Lavender
Time: Spring, Early Summer

Notes: A very fragrant annual, it has masses of tiny flowers. We use it at the edge of the bed because it stays very low and close to paths and seating areas so that the fragrance can be enjoyed. Plant in the fall, October or November. if temperatures have cooled down. It will prefer mostly sun in the cooler months and we often use it under deciduous trees. It prefers moist, well-drained soil.
